Dear Comrades,
After five years of severe crisis, Europe seems to be at the crossroads more than ever before. The ruling elites offer us but more of the same, cutting costs, blaming the public sector, convincing us that we have lived beyond our means and now have to endure the consequences. This is a well-known path that has proven itself to be socially disastrous. One only needs to look at the European periphery to realise how barbarous austerity measures actually are. Angela Merkel, German chancellor and president of the Christian Democratic Union, is among the most powerful proponents of these policies. Because of this ideology, not only Greek but also German workers are suffering and are forced to endure the heaviest burden of the current crisis. Meanwhile, the ruling elites have managed not only to maintain their privileged status, but even to increase their profits.
Although it seems that Christian Democrats are in for a landslide victory, theirs is not the voice of the European working class. Fortunately, there are other parties, those who, faced with the old dilemma of Barbarism vs. Socialism, opt for the second, rational option. One of those parties arguing for a different, ultimately socialist Europe is Die Linke. The Initiative for Democratic Socialism shares such policies and strongly supports German comrades. Only an alliance of progressive political movements such as Die Linke, Front de Gauche and Syriza can provide a rational, socialist solution to the current crisis of capitalism.
The future is democratic socialism!
